Growing Your Character
Growing your character is a huge part of what we do here on Paths of Rebirth. We want them to develop as characters and also get stronger in the grand scheme of the universe. How you do this is simple and involves the use of Soul Points: the currency used to purchase everything from techniques to letter rank ups and more. Gaining Soul Points is simply done by IN-CHARACTER posting, however further detail is outlined in the second post in this topic.
You might be wondering how exactly your character get stronger by using them? All of our characters are governed by five basic abilities. These abilities are what determine your skills in battle. They are: Attack Power, Defensive Power, Movement, Spiritual Control and finally Spiritual Energy.
If you look at the table right below, you'll see that each of the abilities your character has goes by a different name depending on your race. So if you're a Shinigami, your ability with regard to movement and speed is Hoho. For Quincy in that same ability, it's called Hirenkyaku.
Shinigami | Hollow | Quincy | Human | |
Attack Power & Weaponry Control | Zanjutsu | Atacar | Combat | Fullbring |
Defensive Power & Physical Strength | Hakuda | Hierro | Blut | Physical |
Movement & Reaction Speed | Hoho | Sonido | Hirenkyaku | Bringer Light |
Spiritual Energy Control | Kido | Cero | Ginto | Proficiency |
Raw Spiritual Energy | Reiatsu | Reiatsu | Reishi Absorption | Reiryoku |
You might be wondering how Soul Points come into play. As you earn Soul Points from IN-CHARACTER posting you will soon gather enough to purchase "rank ups" for your character. This is merely a way of saying your character is getting stronger. For every rank up your character goes through, you are able to strengthen your skill in the abilities we mentioned. The abilities above are each divided into "power levels" that determine your aptitude in that field.
The "power levels" are called Tiers. Every ability (Attack Power, Defensive Power, Movement, Spiritual Control, Spiritual Energy) has a base Tier of 1. This Tier indicates that your skill in that particular field is beginner. From Tier 1, the power levels extend all the way to Tier 5 (being a master in that field). For example consider a Shinigami with a Tier 1 Hoho skill. They would be at a very beginner level compared to a Shinigami that has their Hoho at Tier 5. The difference here in speed would be astounding. Something to consider here: as you might remember from our [Rank Guide], Rank dwarfs Tier level with regard to combat and power level. That is to say that a Tier 4 Hoho ability is very different for a D Rank character versus a B Rank Character
To summarize: Soul Points are in part what you use to rank your character. When you get enough Soul Points to achieve a new rank, you are able to increase your abilities to different Tiers. For each rank you reach, you are allowed to bump one or more ability to higher Tiers. See the chart below to determine what each rank offers for Tier increases.

E-D | +2 |
D-C | +2 |
C-B | +3 |
B-A | +3 |
A-S | +3 |
S-S+ | +2 |
Let's use our Shinigami example again. Pretend this Shinigami gained enough Soul Points to rank up from Rank C to Rank B. This character would be allowed +3 Tier increases. This means that they could bump any ability (Hoho, Zanjutsu, etc) up by 3 Tiers, or pick three abilities and increase them by one Tier each (or any combination of ability and increase with a max of 3).
In the final post of this topic you'll see how many Soul Points are required for each rank increase.
